As Wrights Group went into administration, the Wright family blamed its plight on 'global changes from diesel to electric in bus technology [that] have caused a sharp decline in demand for buses in the UK'. A home market down by 39% since 2015 has been hard for all manufacturers to weather, but explains only part of the disaster that has overcome the company, its workforce of over 1,200 and those in the wider supply chain in Northern Ireland and beyond. It has been overwhelmed by a perfect storm of external and internal factors. From formation in 1946 by Robert Wright and his son William, who was knighted last year and is now 92, this was a business that grew from a small scale general coachbuilder into building specialist vehicles and from the early 1990s focused exclusively on manufacturing bus bodies, later complete vehicles.
