Since the beginning of Calpine in 1984 from a cardboard table with a Princess telephone, we've had a vision of what we wanted the company to be. When independent power companies were just getting off the ground in the early 1980s under the auspices of the Public Utility Regulatory Policy Act (PURPA), we observed a number of very fundamental factors in the industry that have resulted in our success. Calpine's very singular strategy was to become a major generator of electricity in the United States. Electricity production, transmission and distribution in this country is a $250 billion per year industry, a good portion of which is generation. It's the third largest industry in the United States behind automobiles and health care. And it's an industry that is moving in California and nationwide from a regulated environment to competition and customer choice.
