Great Basin Center for Geothermal Energy: Summary of Activities

The Great Basin Center for Geothermal Energy at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) was organized in 2000 to promote geother-mal energy development in the Great Basin of the western United States, and notably in Nevada. The Great Basin is a physiographic region covering portions of Oregon, Idaho, Utah, and Arizona and all of Nevada. A mid-summer 2000 Geothermal Energy in Nevada and the West public workshop on the UNR campus co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the (U.S.) Geothermal Energy Association on the UNR campus―and hosted by Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV)―attracted more than 100 stakeholders from national, regional, local and tribal governments, the geothermal industry, research institutions, and public policy and environmental groups, to discuss ways of increasing geothermal energy use in Nevada.
