Energy development from Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) has long captured the imagination of scientists and engineers. The idea has its roots in a project begun in the early 1950s, when scientists at the Atomic Energy Commission considered utilizing heat from underground nuclear detonations for peaceful applications, including generating electricity by pumping water through the hot, underground cavern that stored the heat of an explosion. Technical issues prevented the success of "Project Plowshare," which was terminated in the mid-1970s, not long after the first major oil crisis. However Plowshare spawned a thought process that focused on recovering the earth's natural heat from artificially created fractures deep underground.
