Western Renewable Energy Zones

On May 28, the Western Governors Association and the US Department of Energy launched the Western Renewable Energy Zones (WREZ) project. The goal is to use Western areas with vast, renewable resources to expedite development and delivery of clean, renewable energy. Participating are 11 states, two Canadian provinces, and the areas of Mexico part of the Western Interconnection. Guiding the initiative will be the WREZ Steering Committee, composed of governors, public-utility commissioners, and premiers. Officials from the US Departments of Energy, Interior, and Agriculture, as well as the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission are ex officio members.
