ADVANCED AND AUTOMATED OPERATION OF LOCKS AND BRIDGES

This report considers the technical, operational and legal issues, needs and problems when automating locks and moveable bridges. The report reviews the different degrees of automation, i.e. keeper operation, manual self operation, remote operation, self operation semi-automatic and fully automatic operation. It relates to a survey answered by 15 nations. The result of the survey gives an indication of their operational needs, the extent of technical innovation and the perceived benefits and disadvantages of automated systems.
