Today's status of sea transport in Japan and recent effort to activate it

The authors would like to demonstrate that ship transport is beneficial to consignors because of its reasonable cost. It also brings benefits to the entire society by its lesser use of various resources, fuels and manpower, making it suitable to the urban environment. The report is comprised of six sections: In Section 1: a comprehensive view of sea transport in Japan is given. In Section 2: a statistical analysis of the international part of transport in Japan is presented. In Section 3: the situation of domestic cargo flows in Japan is analyzed. In Section 4: consignors' demands for shipping activity are introduced and verified by survey results, especially for inter-modal measures. In Section 5: efforts being made to develop the Techno Super Liner (TSL) are presented, with various evaluations. In Section 6: the need for a balanced development of fields related to sea transport is stressed.%Les auteurs voudraient démontrer que le transport par bateau est avantageux pour les expéditeurs de par son prix raisonnable et profite à la société dans son ensemble puisqu'il consomme moins de ressources, de carburants et de main-d'oeuvre, ce qui le rend éminemment apte au milieu urbain. Partant de là, l'article développe les points suivants: Section 1 : appréciation globale du transport maritime au Japon. Section 2: analyse statistique du transport intermodal au Japon. Section 3: analyse des flux de marchandises intérieurs au Japon. Section 4: exigences des expéditeurs en matière de transports, et vérification par les résultats d'études, en particulier pour le transport intermodal. Section 5: présentation du développement du Techno Super Liner (TSL) et diverses évaluations. Section 6: nécessité d'un développement équilibré des domaines connexes au transport maritime.
