Herbert Gleiter Gives Von Hippel Award Presentation on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology

Herbert Gleiter (Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe), in his Von Hippel Award presentation, described his work in nanoscience and nanotechnology (NS/ NT). In the past, studies on NS/NT have focused primarily on two areas: (1) the generation and understanding of nanometer-sized structures and/or devices; and (2) synthesis and understanding of materials with nanometer-sized microstructures. In recent years, a new branch seems to have emerged, Gleiter said, which is characterized by the application of preparation methods and /or diagnostic tools developed in NS/NT, to perform new, decisive experiments or to open the way to novel applications in areas of science that were originally unrelated to NS/NT such as cancer research, cellular imaging, or quantum physics.
