Executive Vice Mayor Leads Panel Discussion On Industrial Development In Chongqing

On behalf of the Chongqing Municipal Government, Executive Vice-Mayor Qifan Huang hosted an evening meeting among top leaders of the Chongqing government and the International Materials Research Conference to discuss issues of science and technology, particularly in relation to industrial development in Chongqing. Huang presented some key focus areas for Chongqing, such as automotive/motorcycles, manufacturing equipment, raw materials and chemicals, electronics, solar cells, and energy, plus the importance of a trained labor force. Polymers, poly-crystalline silicon, and magnesium are materials of particular focus in this region, with collaborations with companies elsewhere in the world. A substantive and engaging question-and-answer session followed, and focused on issues such as how to address CO_2 emissions in a culture of growth and increased energy use, how the region is able to start new industries in very short times, the opportunities for ongoing collaboration, and contemplating what is next after "nano."
