Canada is a vast land, its peoples separated by geography at once beautiful, haunting and unforgiving. It was the unenviable task of the Fathers of Confederation and the Dominion government in 1867 to attempt to tie the immensity of the land and its inhabitants together into a meaningful, coherent whole. This responsibility has been the watchword of every Federal government since then. "Unity thru diversity" is a hallmark of the Canadian experience and is at the heart of the operations of any Canadian ministry.%Le Canada est un vaste pays et ses habitants sont séparés par des composantes géographiques aussi belles qu'envoûtantes et impitoyables.
