J'ai eu le bonheur de participer pour la I lème fois à une conférence de l'AISM, c'est-à-dire à toutes les conférences de l'association depuis sa création en 1957. Pourquoi alors ce titre de XVIIème conférence ? Cherchez l'erreur..... Cette différence de 6 unités se trouve dans l'historique même des conférences. En effet, bien avant que l'on pense à une association, en fait dès l'Exposition Universelle de Paris en 1889, se sont tenues des réunions d'experts en ? travaux maritimes ? qui à l'époque comprenaient les phares et balises. Au cours d'un de ces congrès réuni au Caire en 1926, quelques ingénieurs particulièrement concernés par la signalisation maritime ont décidé d'organiser des réunions spécifiques à ce domaine.%This article is by Mme Christiane Ville former Executive Director of IALA and currently an Honorary Personal Member of the Association. She outlines all the International Lighthouse Conferences from 1929 until the 1950s. Before those there was interest in aids to navigation with the Universal Exhibition in Paris of 1889 and its associated meetings, with further interest in a Cairo Conference in 1926. She has attended all those since the formation of IALA in 1957 and records the difficulties and highlights of being a member of the organising Secretariat from 1965 (Rome) through to Veldhoven in 1990 by way of Stockholm (1970), Ottowa (1975), Tokyo (1980) and Brighton (1985). She was later to attend as an Honorary Personal Member at Conferences held in Hawaii (1994), Hamburg (1998), Sydney (2002), Shanghai (2006) and Cape Town this year and recalls here the amazing variety of cultures with which she has worked in this great family of IALA.
