Protecting Cultural Relics from Indoor Pollution

Teaming up with experts from the Emperor Qin's Terracotta Army Museum, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the US Desert Research Institute, CAS scientists are trying to protect the museum's terracotta warriors and horses from a modern day foe - air pollution. Joint research on indoor air pollution at the Museum was recently launched in Xi'an, the capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province. Prof. An Zhisheng from the CAS Institute of Earth Environment and the museum director Wu Yongqi will take charge of the 2-million-yuan (240,000 US dollars) project. In the next two years, scientists will carry out research into pollutants' impact on the terracotta figurines that guard the tomb of Qin Shihuang. China's first emperor in the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC).
