Vibrational excitations in electron energy loss spectroscopy of liquids

We show electron energy loss spectra from the surface of liquids with resolved vibrational excitations. At 1-octanol C-H stretching and C-H bending modes are clearly resolved. The specific problems of working with liquids in high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) and some differences to the results from surfaces of solids and from gases are discussed.
