摘要

Pigs play a major role in the socio-economic life of the people of the middle belt central states of Nigeria. Substantial portions of the country's pig populations are found within this region comprising of the following states: Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Kaduna (Southern part), Niger, Nasarawa and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The pig population of this region is about 1.5 million pigs. Whereas pigs serve as a major source of income for the rural populace around this region, they also play an important cultural role that cannot be measured in monetary value. The occurrence of diseases especially African swine fever (ASF) has adversely affected the productivity of pigs in this region. As a result of the devastating effects of ASF, animal protein output, especially, pork has been grossly affected.
