A highly competitive trading environment combined with fewer projects being promoted means that consulting engineers, including those engaged in the maritime, transport and logistics sectors, are having to rethink their business strategies. In particular, more mergers and acquisitions are being negotiated or discussed, aggressive cost-cutting programmes implemented, and value-added services introduced. In other moves, some companies are deciding to concentrate on specific industrial sectors and/or regions. The net result should be a leaner business sector fronted by experts in specific fields and/or regions, but also offering a wider range of advisory, planning and training services.
