Much of the attention surrounding cargo sampling has focused on the potential for bulk materials to liquefy, endangering the carrying vessel. This has been made evident by the continuing losses of bulk carriers at sea, many of which are suspected of having been caused by cargo liquefaction. But while this topic is of critical importance, it should not be forgotten that everyday cargo sampling remains at the core of the testing process. While the vast majority of cases do not have potentially catastrophic consequences, sampling still carries some risks that, if not properly addressed, can result in the rejection of millions of dollars of cargo.
