The past few years have seen a massive increase in the amount of cargo that can be processed at India's main ports, with their current design throughput capacity of approximately 1.5 Btpa up more than 36% (400 Mtpa) on the situation four years ago. Meanwhile, a mix of ambitious state-funded programmes, such as Sagar Mala, which was launched in 2015, and large-scale privately financed initiatives, means that a further and substantial ramp-up in capacity will take place up to 2035. Under the Sagar Mala plan alone, for instance, more than US$22B will be spent on over 600 projects, and this includes the development of six mega-ports.
