Big upgrade for Nacala

Work on the US$273M upgrade of the coal port of Nacala has begun. A new round of dredging will allow access for larger vessels, and a 1 km access road and 400m quay are being built. Nacala has mainly been developed as a coal export port, and the new coal terminal at Nacala-a-Velha will be able to handle 18 Mtpa when it is completed. A joint venture of Sacyr Somague Mocambique and Teixeira Duarte has been awarded the main construction and engineering contract on the project, which is worth US$123.2M and will run for three years.
