America's bulk terminals have enjoyed steady US economic growth and strong domestic and international demand for commodities, despite the recent slowing of China's economic boom. But as the sector enters 2019, the big questions are whether US growth is cooling, where trade tensions with China are going and what next for coal? The answers will go some way towards shaping the prospects for US bulk ports. In the meantime, recent investment, as the drag of the recession of a decade ago recedes, has readied many bulk ports to meet changing demand patterns and diversify cargoes - not least as the future of one of its mainstays, coal, remains uncertain.
