Among recent developments, Svendborg of Denmark has been building references for its "SOBO" (soft braking option) braking control system in the conveyor brake market. SOBO uses tacho sensors to measure speed during braking and regulates the braking torque to keep braking within predetermined time and speed (rpm) limits, providing an exact stopping time regardless of the load on the conveyor. Controlled braking extends the life of conveyor components as well as the brakes themselves, and prevents overloads at loading areas from conveyor stopping before loading has ceased. For example. Svendborg Australia, a division of Simon Hydraulics & Pneumatics, has secured orders for braking systems at a number of major port and mine upgrades. Last year two big orders for conveyor brakes were secured through transmission supplier Flender: for three conveyors at Northparks Mine in NSW and for the Mining area C development at Port Hedland and the Pilbaral mine in Western Australia.
