The Baltic Dry Index (BDI), the recognised benchmark for fixing bulk vessel charter rates, has now topped a record 10,000 points, rising steeply since end 2006 when the BDI stood at around 2,000 points. With no shortage of cargoes and healthy freight rates, it is now paramount to reduce ship turnaround times to maximise bulker utilisation.
