Great Lakes St. Lawrence seeing recovery

After posting low cargo volumes in 2008 and 2009, and a small recovery last year, the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway System is projected to handle slightly over 39 mt of cargo this year, a 7% increase over 2010. Most of the increase will come from the region's traditional cargoes of grain and iron ore, although shipments of road salt are also projected to increase, and project cargoes related to wind energy and oil sands developments will add tonnage. Iron ore shipments on the Lakes totalled 6.3 mt by mid-year, an increase of 6.4% compared to a year ago, and June loadings were up 10% compared to that month's five-year average.
