Aurukun bauxite back on market

The Queensland Government is to put the massive Aurukun bauxite project back on the international market after running out of patience with China's Chalco. State Treasurer Andrew Fraser said the government would conduct a new global tender for the development rights to the Aurukun resource, 50km south of Weipa on Western Cape York, which is estimated to be capable of producing 10 mtpa. "The original tender process in 2005-06 was based on bidders committing to develop the bauxite resource as a bauxite mine as well as a new alumina refinery to process that bauxite in Queensland," Fraser said.
