Another major iron ore project is being lined up for South Australia's Eyre Peninsula, this time by Perth-based Iron Road. The company plans to produce at least 12.4 mt of concentrate a year from a mine near Wudinna, according to a first-stage economic study. Iron Road says the project will be the state's largest iron ore mine and will rival OneSteel operations at Whyalla. Initial estimates suggest a life of 12 years, beginning in 2015, but Iron Road expects the mine could extend to 25-30 years following more detailed exploration. Included in the Central Eyre project is the mine, a crushing and grinding plant, and a slurry pipeline and pumping stations to transport the ore to the proposed port at Sheep Hill north of Tumby Bay.
