Using containers to ship agricultural products looks set to become more prevalent in the future, particularly for handling exports from North America and establishing new supply chains in Australia. Commodity crops like wheat, corn and pulses have traditionally been controlled by agricultural cooperatives or producer boards and been exported in bulk. Canada and Australia have both recently reformed monopoly wheat boards, opening these markets to new players. Often these are smaller companies who handle thousands rather than millions of tonnes per year and are looking for more flexible solutions with lower cost of entry.
