A row has broken out in Quebec over the provincial government's support for a new cement plant in Gaspe region, after it announced a partnership to build a C$1B cement plant in Port-Daniel-Gascons. The plant will be developed by Mclnnis Cement Inc using a C$250M loan from the Quebec Government, as well as investments from the provincial pension fund and other government sources totalling C$200M. The Gaspe region is rich in limestone and construction of a cement plant began in 1998, but was "interrupted for a few years due to a lack of financial and organisational resources", according to Mclnnis. The new plan is for a much bigger facility with an initial capacity of 2.2 Mtpa. It includes a quarry and receiving areas for clinker and other materials. The final product would be conveyed to a shiploader.
