Australia's Victorian regional ports of Portland and Gee-long will be the major beneficiaries of a A$416M state government plan to standardise much of Victoria's rail freight network. Large parts of the network are broad gauge for historical reasons, and gradual standardisation of the national network has left parts of Victoria isolated. The government said the Murray Basin Rail Project will particularly benefit Victoria's northern and northwestern regions, and boost capacity and reliability of rail freight services. The project will see lines from Geelong to Mildura, Manangatang, Sea Lake and Murrayville standardised, and the existing unused standard gauge connection between Maryborough and Ararat will be reopened.
