The European Standard for Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design

In 2007 the European Standard - TR 14383-2 'Crime Prevention - Urban Planning' was issued by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). While the standard was still in the phase of approval, a team was set up with European funding to work on a handbook for its application. This was published in 2008 in four languages (English, French, Spanish and Italian) and largely diffused among local authorities and universities with the support of the national Safety Forums of Italy, France and Spain. What is a European Standard in the field of crime prevention? How was it constructed? The purpose of this paper is to answer these questions and then to expose in more detail the content of the Handbook.
