Reduced sales and higher costs put margins under pressure

Operating margins across three of the UK's largest housebuilders came under pressure in 2019, as higher construction costs, investment in customer care programmes and reduced sales took their toll. Taylor Wimpey reported that its operating profit margin had fallen from 21.6% to 19.6%, after operating profit fell 3.4% to £851m. This was largely due to rising construction costs and the amount of money it had ploughed into areas such as customer care and increasing its production capacity.
