Berkeley Homes set up its REACH apprenticeship scheme in 2016 and now operates across seven London boroughs. It seeks to narrow the skills gap by providing training in skills that are vital to the industry but infrequently taught. In situations where courses are not available, the firm says it has worked with colleges to set them up -for instance a fitted interiors course at the Building Crafts College in Stratford - and will send apprentices around the country to find the most suitable course. Each apprentice is assigned a Berkeley Homes mentor and there is a focus on personal skills such as confidence, leadership and negotiation, culminating in a week-long Outward Bound Trust trip. The scheme has worked with nearly 30 organisations including local authorities, housing associations and charities to engage with as diverse an audience as possible.
