LEED's next generation - a response

Although it was not possible to provide a formal US Green Building Council (USGBC) response to the recent paper 'Informing LEED's next generation with The Natural Step' (Zimmerman and Kibert, 2007) due to time constraints, we would like to provide a preliminary response to some of the authors' points and the overall concept of using The Natural Step to inform Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). First, we appreciate all thoughtful suggestions for improving LEED as an assessment system. Discussions of fundamentals as well as specific credits are essential for the ongoing improvement of the system.
