Relying on cheap labour

Eighteen years ago I was one of hundreds of recent part I graduates confronted by the challenge of finding suitable employment in the depths of a recession. While bolder contemporaries got on aeroplanes and secured jobs in Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur, I landed at a sleepy regional practice which claimed to be able to pay only travel expenses.
