In the USSR, after it became obvious that certain works, and moreover certain opinions, were never going to get published, a tradition emerged of writing "for the desk drawer". The best of these books, 20th century classics by the likes of Bulgakov or Platonov, have been recovered from the drawer to enduring fame and acclaim.
