Britain's arts sector has been told it must do more to boost economic growth. The days of art for art's sake are over. Only those organisations that can show they are combining "creativity with commercial nous" will be supported, the culture secretary Maria Miller warned this week. It is an argument that is not confined to the arts. Defending architecture for architecture's sake is also unlikely to gain much support these days. This is understandable up to a point.
