摘要

THE DAY HURRICANE MARIA passed over the small Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, the U.S. territory's problems were just beginning. After the hurricane, some areas went 11 months without power, and as the late summer turned to early autumn, packed hospitals were trying to provide for their patients while battling 112-degree heat, malfunctioning backup generators, and a lack of water, food, and medicine. To make matters worse, it was near impossible to resupply the food, water, and medicine because the roads were littered with debris from Maria's 155-mph winds, rendering them impassable. When all of these problems were added up, the result is one of the costliest and deadliest hurri-canes in U.S. history. Some estimates put the death toll for Hurricane Maria and its aftermath at more than 3,000.
