Enhancing Materials Re-use on Brownfield Sites

Brownfield Redevelopment projects often present challenges to provide a sustainable and cost effective materials management solution where contaminated soils require remediation or are generated as part of site enabling works. In 2014/15, Ground Risk Solutions contractor Soilfix successfully completed two contracts where detailed consideration of materials management at the conceptual design stage enabled a significant reduction in the volume of materials requiring excavation and treatment with minimal off-site disposal to landfill. Both projects were carried out fully in accordance with CL:AIRE Definition of Waste: Development Industry Code of Practice, and the conceptual design incorporated a Tier 2 Assessment under the Sustainable Remediation Forum (SuRF) framework.
