'Contaminated land' activists recognised in Goldman Prize

Activists from Australia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guatemala, India, Slovenia, and the US were each given the Goldman Environmental Prize for hugely important work that included mitigating the effects of land contamination. The winners of the world's largest award for grassroots environmental activists were recognised at a ceremony in Washington DC. Indian Prafulla Samantara won the award for his 12-year legal battle in defending the indigenous Dongria Kondh's community's land rights and protecting the Niyamgiri Hills from a huge, open-pit aluminium ore mine.
