The soil compaction problem

Unsurprisingly it's a huge problem, by virtue of the fact that construction sites see constant trafficking over the soil from construction activities and plant, machinery and vehicle movements, which all contribute to compaction. Although the topsoil on greenfield sites is usually stripped and stockpiled during construction, it is very rare for construction contractors to do what farmers do and de-compact the subsoil layer before the topsoil is replaced so that the two layers can integrate more readily and good drainage is maintained before landscaping commences.
