TV networks could not have picked a better year to start selling sponsorships of their Election Night coverage than 1948. That election brought a victory for incumbent PRESIDENT HARRY TRUMAN over Republican THOMAS DEWEY by a razor-thin margin. Broadcasting (now B&C) noted that advertisers got "triple their money's worth" as the returns went "on and on" without a decision.
