The Super Hi-Vision (SHV) system is an audio/video system conveying a heightened sensation of reality to the viewer. It is being developed as a next-generation television system. The Science & Technology Research Laboratories has been presenting SHV programs and device demonstrations at our annual STRL Open House and at broadcasting technology exhibitions in Japan and overseas. The pixel count for an SHV video is intended to be 33 million pixels, 16 times that of the current Hi-Vision (HD) system. At the time of the initial development of the camera in 2002, it was not technologically possible to manufacture a 33-million-pixel imaging sensor. To counter this limitation, a prototype camera system was fabricated in a dual-green format with four 8.3-million-pixel imaging devices. This format effectively raises the resolution of the camera.
