Dell and HP are pushing into the gaming-PC business by offering souped-up computers. Such major hardware manufacturers are aiming to take advantage of gaming's winning streak with high-performance, slick models for hardcore players prepared to pay top dollar for the ultimate experience. On June 21, Dell announced the worldwide launch of two new desktops - Dimension XPS and Dimension 8400. The latter model comprises a Pentium 4520 (2.8GHz) chip, 512MB memory, a 80GB hard drive and 128MB video card and starts at £719 ($1,309) including sales tax and delivery in the UK, for example. Gavin Duncan, Dell's European product marketing manager, told BM that customization is a key characteristic of the new breed of gaming PCs entering the market. The Dimension machines are configured to order, rather than coming off the shelf, and there are options to add more memory, bigger hard drives and super high-end video drives.
