Comcast is the U.S.' biggest pay-TV op, but as television increasingly becomes an interactive, on-demand, multi plat form medium, conventional TV distributors — even one with 22 million subs — must respond to the changing broadcast landscape. Comcast is going for it. Its most recent move is the acquisition of The Plat form, an out fit that specializes in streaming-media technology, for a reported US$80-100 million price tag. The Plat form provides the system that powers The Fan — the video player at the cabler's online portal, Comcast.net — and it boasts a string of other major clients, including ABC News, The Wall Street Journal and Vongo, Starz Entertainment Group's movie-download service (CM, 27 Feb, 2005). The Plat form says its revenues doubled in 2005 and should double again in 2006, driven by the burgeoning online-video market.
