Pentagon and Telegraph at loggerheads over new Abu Ghraib photographs

A debate over the existence of five-year old unseen images taken at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq has pitted the US government and a UK newspaper, after the latter claimed they allegedly depict violence, sexual abuse and rape of prisoners.The images are expected to be released in the next few weeks, unless US president Barack Obama has his way. As revealed by The Daily Telegraph last week, more than 2000 images taken by military officers in the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq show violent sexualabuse against Iraqi prisoners. Talking to the newspaper, former Major General Antonio Taguba, who conducted an inquiry into the abuses, described the content of some of the images.'These pictures show torture, abuse, rape and every indecency,' Taguba tells The Telegraph. One picture shows an American soldier apparently raping a female prisoner another show a male translator raping a male detainee, while other images 'are said to depict sexual assaults on prisoners withobjects including a truncheon, wire and a phosphorescent tube', the newspaper writes.
