Metastatic malignant pleural mesothelioma of the tongue: report of a case

A 59-year-old Japanese woman noticed a swelling of the dorsal surface of the tongue that had persisted for about eight months. She presented with persistent swelling of the left dorsal surface of the tongue. On oral examination, there was an elastic soft, demarcated, and painless mass 5 mm in diameter (Fig. La). She had had a left extrapleural pneumonectomy 3 years before and the histopathological diagnosis was a malignant pleural mesothelioma (epithelial type). She had also lived near an asbestos plant until she was 20 years old. She was given chemotherapy (cisplatin and pemetrexed) for multiple skin metastases.
