摘要

The literature on Indonesia's labour movement is still quite scant despite its importance for the country's social, economic and political development. Michele Ford's book is a welcome and important contribution to a deeper understanding of contemporary Indonesia. Ford's interest is not just the labour movement in the 1980s and 1990s — though it covers those years extremely well — but rather the relationships between NGOs and the labour movement. In focusing on this relationship, she has confirmed the importance of analysing labour unions in the broad context of Indonesia's political development during the late New Order and through the transition to democracy.
