In the last few decades, employment relationships have changed their nature, and the very definition of 'employee' has become more and more disputed. The relevance of the issue is apparent when thinking about the rights and protections usually attached to the status of dependent employee. The focus of this collection, as stated by Judy Fudge in the first chapter (p. 3), is on 'paid work that blurs traditional legal boundaries and the challenge it poses to traditional forms of labour regulation'. Its aim is 'to provide a glimpse of the heterogeneity of contemporary work arrangements in order to challenge the traditional legal boundaries of work regulation' (p. 26). The book identifies two main themes around which the changes in labour market structure and employment relations revolve: informalization and commercialization of labour.
