The Thoughts of a Junior Nurse

This article will reflect upon a clinical incident involving the issue of consent, utilising Gibbs’ structured model of reflection [Gibbs, 1988]. The incident will be briefly described followed by a discussion on my feelings and thoughts, and an evaluation of the positive and negative aspects of this incident. Subsequently, a critical analysis of the incident focusing on the three key themes of consent, advocacy and beneficence will explore legal and ethical issues. To conclude, an overall summary of learning achieved and the main points of the essay will be given followed by an action plan that will highlight future developments and changes to my professional practice. Confidentiality will be maintained throughout in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council [NMC; 2008] code.
