Interbrew told to sell Bass Brewers in the UK

Britain's Secretary of State for Trade and Industry Stephen Byers has decided not to permit the integration of Bass Brewers' UK business into Interbrew. The Belgium-based international brewer had purchased Bass Brewers last lune (see BD1 luly 2000)— just after buying Whitbread Beer Co—thus creating the UK's largest brewing group with a market share of between 32 and 35%. Interbrew will be required to sell Bass Brewers' UK business to a buyer approved of by the Director General of Fair Trading (DGFT).
