As Germany's Reinheitsgebot approaches its 5OOth anniversary, a group of brewers, politicians and public figures have called for the country's 1516 beer purity law to be included on the UN's list of 'intangible' cultural treasures. We'll bet that most readers did not know such a list existed but it includes flamenco dancing in Spain, traditional carpet-weaving in Iran, the chant of the Sybil in Majorca, wrestling in oil in Turkey, falconry, Chinese calligraphy, dragon boating racing and acupuncture as well as the Mediterranean diet. Altogether there are 90 treasures from 71 countries.
