One of the major themes that emerged from this research was that the well-established, linear technical career paths are now a thing of the past. These days career paths are branched, with many lateral and upward moves, so the more flexible and agile and broad your approach, the greater sustainability and resilience you will have. From my experience as a career coach, and from research for these articles, an increasingly common strategy for growing career flexibility is moving between alcoholic beverage sectors. There were multiple reasons why changing sectors could be advantageous. Clearly it gives you a wider range of potential employers, but there are also benefits in widening your technical skill-set that can be attractive to employers. For example, experience in spirits production could be useful for a brewery looking to diversify.
